KTC x Aktiv8d 2026 Summer Report

We are undoubtedly in a different era of music consumption than we were even five years ago.

For a while, I thought maybe streaming had begun to kill hip-hop specifically, because it seemed like everyone was looking for quantity over quality, and we, the fans, would get restless when an artist took too long to drop.

There was a streak of low-effort albums from big name artists, in my opinion, and I noticed complaints that all went something like, “We’re never getting music like these guys made in 2016 or 2018 or 2020 ever again.” 

Artists like Drake, J. Cole and Larry June have proved to us midway through 2026 that if we want to get back to great music, patience is required.

What I’ve Loved So Far

J. Cole - "The Fall Off" Album

When J. Cole announced that "The Fall Off" was finally releasing this past February, my first reaction was “Jeez, it’s about damn time.” But then after hearing the two disc magnum opus that is supposedly the legendary artist’s final solo project, it did not disappoint whatsoever. His promotional tour driving an old Honda Civic around the country and popping up in cities to sell CDs was awesome and nostalgic, and generated some next level hype for his tour that just kicked off last week. I will say, I’m not sure I’ve ever been as excited to see a concert as I am to see Cole in August.

Drake - The "Iceman" Surprise Album Trio

Speaking of taking forever to drop, it seemed like Drake teased "Iceman" for over a year… because he did. Through a series of cryptic, slow-moving promotional episodes that released every couple of months, we got singles like “What Did I Miss” and other snippets of songs that would eventually appear on the album. What no one anticipated however, was that he would drop three different albums on the same day as"Iceman."

Fans were treated to "Habibti," "Iceman," and "Maid of Honour." You can’t tell me that the three albums spelling "HIM" with each first letter wasn’t intentional, and only Drizzy Drake would do something as corny, but also clever as this. I loved songs from all three albums, and I hope a tour ensues.

Larry June - "Who Coppin" Album

This one came out of nowhere for me. I have been a fan of Larry June for a long time, but after multiple collab projects with artists like 2 Chainz and Curren$y, I was ready for him to finally drop a solo project again. Rumors sparked up this summer that he’s been dating Jhené Aiko, and sure enough, she’s featured on what is a really vibey, easy listening, summer anthem in "California Dream."

The album encapsulates the aesthetic that really made me become a fan of Larry June years ago, and there’s just something about bumping some Larry June with the windows down in the summertime that feels right.

Nipsey Hussle - "Prolific" Album and Documentary

Nipsey Hussle’s posthumous "Prolific" album that is set to release in August is one that I’ve been anxiously anticipating. It's a collab project with Bino Rideaux and the lead single, "Sacrifices," hits the soul. There will also be a documentary to coincide, and being that Nip was one of my all-time favorites, both the album and documentary could be tear-filled, and I really don’t care.

Lil Uzi Vert’s New Album, Old Sound

Okay, hear me out, Lil Uzi Vert hasn’t made anything all that memorable in a couple of years, but I heard his recent single, "Regular" and it would seem that he’s bringing back his old sound. I’m talking about the "XO Tour Life," "Baby Pluto" sound defined by melodic whimsy. If he keeps that same vibe on the album set to drop later this summer, it could be a super banger.

Gunna Never Disappoints

One artist that I genuinely feel has not had a true letdown, although I like some projects more than others, is Gunna. Right before Tay Keith passed away just weeks ago, I heard a leak of a new Gunna song that he produced right before his tragic death, and it was electric. The rapper has always known his sound, and has been consistently great for almost 10 years now, so I’m always hyped up for new Gunna. Rest in peace Tay Keith.

Damian Lillard - "And Still" Single

Damian Lillard aka Dame D.O.L.L.A. dropped this one for his birthday. The video showcases the NBA star's love for boxing and the track is a great one to enjoy while we anticipate his return to the court.

E.M.E - "Midnight Groove" Single

The homie E.M.E released another bop. We still have plenty of summer to soak this one in. And we love that the cover art is a play on "Where's Waldo?"

Byron Juane - "Nobody But You" Single

If you're not familiar, Byron Juane is an awesome R&B artist who always brings the vibes. His new single, "Nobody But You" is an excellent listen for the lovers.

KB - "This Cannot Be Sold" Album

KB is an incredible lyricist who spits heat over the fiercest of beats. His album feels relevant while offering an uplifting message that our value is beyond what the world wants to place on us.
