It's an annual tradition in Colorado. Right when spring teases everyone with a glimpse of warmth, there is always a final snowfall to drag winter on just a bit longer. And, in 2025, that snow happened to fall on the Colorado Rockies Opening Day.
The Rockies played their first home game of the 2025 season at Coors Field on Friday against the Athletics. Their opponent doesn't have a city identification this season because they are in between leaving Oakland and getting situated in Las Vegas.
The temperature hovered around 37° F with flurries on and off. There weren't as many festivities as previous years. Union Station was fairly quiet instead of the usual booths with party favors, music and even an appearance from the mascot, Dinger. But McGregor Square was lively with their big screen playing highlights from other games around the MLB and drinks flowing freely. There was a Line Drive purple cocktail and purple jello shots.

At the stadium, the traditional Opening Day rituals carried on as usual with a military band performing the National Anthem while a giant American flag was unfurled on the field. Pete Coors, former chairman of Molson Coors Brewing Company, which holds the naming rights for the stadium, threw out the first pitch. Coors Field is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
The Rockies announced that the game was a sellout with an attendance of 48,015, which is technically a sellout, although the stadium was maybe half full.
The game was close with both teams scoring a run in the first inning and then a pair of runs later on. The score was tied at three at the end of nine innings. The Athletics snatched the win 6-3 in 11 innings.
The weather was cold and so was the chill of a loss.
