KTC Music Report: Joy Crookes enlists Vince Staples for her triumphant return, Derek Minor offers hope

Before we begin, Kick The Concrete is devastated to hear of the wildfires in Los Angeles, where the company was born and spread its wings. The City of Angels remains a home away from home and we stand with those affected by the tragedy and those courageously fighting the fires. Please see our Instagram post for some resources and more information on how you can help relief efforts.

For our latest music report, we wanted to share music that offers hope and is feel-good. In such a time of heaviness, we could all use that, right? One of our selections comes from a group hailing from New Orleans, who experienced their own tragedy earlier this month.

Kick The Concrete is all about inspiration and motivation founded on the principle that we can all be roses that rise above our circumstances. No matter what you're facing today, we hope this music inspires you to do just that.

glbl wrmng — "Somebody" Single

glbl wrmng is here to invite each of us to find "Somebody" to vibe with. The bouncy production is infectious and the voices of all the different members — Dominic Scott, $leazy EZ, LeTrainiump, Kr3wcial, Alfred Banks, Odd the Artist and Pell, who worked on the beat, mesh really well together. There's even choir-like moments that take "Somebody" to that extra ethereal level.

Joy Crookes ft. Vince Staples — "Pass the Salt" Single

Vince Staples might be known as the comical gangster rapper from Long Beach, but if you aren't familiar with his non-hip-hop feature game, you are missing out. His latest guest spot is a verse on Joy Crookes' "Pass the Salt." The song marks the British soul singer's return after not releasing music since her critically-acclaimed 2021 album, "Skin." On "Pass the Salt," the two describe battling jealousy, aka saltiness, from the haters and how it brushes off their thick skin. The throbbing bass line is *chef's kiss.

Holdfast — "Crystal Ball" Video

So this is a song about loss and might not exactly be uplifting, but sometimes we need something we can relate to in the moment, right? Denver alternative rock band Holdfast impressed with their vulnerable lyrics and engaging visual for "Crystal Ball." The group challenged themselves to make a budget on literally zero dollars and they delivered. The simplicity of the cozy setting and play with lighting and spacing is really engaging. And it shares a message that you really can make something out of nothing. Which maybe offers hope right there.

Derek Minor — "I'll Be Ok" Lyric Video

Derek Minor is an established vet in the rap game and in the past few years, he's taken the time to experiment outside of the strict parameters of traditional CHH. His most recent release is the lyric video for "I'll Be Ok," which showcases his ability to do more than spit bars. He offers a gentle melody about resilience and invites listeners to overcome with him. The stained glass visuals are mesmerizing.
